Begin with the setting
The first Christians believed in one God.
Calling Jesus divine was not casual language in a culture crowded with interchangeable gods.
Jesus and his earliest followers stood inside Israel’s uncompromising monotheism. The question is therefore not whether they abandoned belief in one God, but why they came to include Jesus within that one God’s identity.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.
